OIG Releases Fall 2012 Semiannual Report to Congress

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Inspector General (OIG) recently released its Fall 2012 Semiannual Report to Congress (Semiannual Report). The report outlines OIG’s audit, evaluation, and investigation activities of HHS programs during the 6 month period beginning April 1, 2012 through September 30, 2012.  According to the Semiannual Report, OIG continues to target weak areas in Medicare and Medicaid program performance and management through the following activities:

  1. Monitoring improper payments and waste through program audits;
  2. Assuring quality of care rendered to beneficiaries; and
  3. Overseeing program integrity contractors’ activities, such as the Audit Medicaid Integrity Contractors.

The Semiannual Report also summarizes OIG’s total recoveries for fiscal year (FY) 2012.  Specifically, OIG’s efforts throughout FY 2012 resulted in recoveries and savings of approximately $15.4 billion, including $923.8 million in audit receivables, $6 billion in investigative receivables, and $8.5 billion in estimated savings resulting from implemented actions supported by the OIG’s recommendations.
