OIG Prepares Annual Summary on 2016 Top Management & Performance Challenges.

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Inspector General (OIG) recently issued its Top Management Challenges (TMC) assessing significant issues facing HHS in the coming year. The Reports Consolidation Act of 2000 requires the OIG to identify management challenges, assess HHS progress in addressing each challenge, and submit an annual statement to HHS.

Significant issues identified by the 2016 TMC include:

  1. Ensuring program integrity in Medicare Parts A and B by reducing improper payments; preventing, detecting, and responding to fraud; and amending payment policies;
  2. Maintaining health information technology, and the meaningful and secure exchange and use of electronic information through ensuring privacy and security; improving flow of information; and advancing the health IT transition;
  3. Effectively administering the Medicaid program through increased regulatory oversight; lowering improper payments; and strengthening program integrity at the state level; and
  4. Curbing the abuse and misuse of controlled and non-controlled drugs in Medicare Part D and Medicaid through increased oversight of Part D plans and prescription drug monitoring programs.
